How the calculator works
- The return is the nominal annual rate. The compounding frequency says how many times a year the return is added: at 6% with monthly compounding that is 0.5% a month, which gives 6.17% a year.
- Contributions are added every month or every year, at the beginning or at the end of the period. A contribution at the beginning earns a return for one period longer.
- Interest is the difference between the end amount and the starting amount plus all contributions.
- Inflation is optional. If you switch it on, every amount is divided by the rise in prices up to its year, and the result shows purchasing power in today’s money. The goal is then understood as today’s purchasing power, while the regular contribution stays the same every month and does not rise with inflation.
The calculator ignores taxes and fees and assumes a steady return, which does not happen in reality: markets fluctuate, and the order of good and bad years affects the result, especially when you keep contributing or withdrawing.
